We purchased a Fischer XAN Spectrometer (XRF) on February 2004 so have been using this instrument for just over 18 years. The instrument is an integral part of our laboratory and has been in continuous use, used virtually on a daily basis.
We use the instrument for materials analysis (usually stainless steels, tool steels and various copper alloys) and for measuring the thickness and type of various electroplated coatings and occasionally PVD type coatings. We have needed virtually no assistance/support but when occasionally needing assistance with new applications etc the Fischer team have always been very helpful.
The instrument has had excellent reliability; in the 18 years of use we have had no problems with it whatsoever, it has not developed any faults and has not needed repair.
It seems likely that we may get more than 20 years of use out of it.
We have found the instrument to have a high degree of accuracy even if calibration standards are not available, and is reasonably easy to use.
If and when we finally need a replacement XRF instrument I fully intend to purchase a Fischer instrument again
