Surface and coating scratches are the type of mechanical failures that can happen in product manufacturing, assembly, shipping and normal handling by the final user. They can deteriorate the final product look and sometimes even lead to more dramatic types of failures due to incorrect coating formulation, surface preparation, application, drying and curing times, as well as the exposure to the environment. This is why, when the total product life-cycle is considered, it’s important to understand how coatings behave under mechanical stress.
We at Fischer have developed a truly unique range of scratch testing machines that allow you to precisely characterise adhesion and cohesion properties of coatings, using optical microscopy, friction force measurements and acoustic emission measurement. High resolution (XY: +/-0.5μm) XYZ stage allows you to precisely control stylus application and test speeds. Meanwhile, constant, progressive and incremental measurement modes allow you to accurately test how coatings behave under various conditions.

The measuring head contains a standard spherical diamond-tipped cone with 120° angle indenter, the test load generating unit, and the position measurement unit for determining the indentation depth. There’s also always an option to upgrade to other indenters that can be supplied on request. The controlled touchdown of the measuring head leads to a very small machine compliance, allowing much more accurate test results.
Powerful high-resolution microscope on ST30 and ST200 allows to focus in exceedingly small areas. The standard lens comes with x5 and x20 with a video-picture in the software of the area 2,688μm x 2,150μm and 672μm x 538μm, respectively. Meanwhile, automatic image recording software allows to capture the whole length of the scratch and easily mark main failure modes (Lc).
